" But Abraham said, ' Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. ' "
( Luke 16:25 )" When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. "
" And they cried with a loud voice, saying, ' How long, O Lord, holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth? ' "
" And a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed. "
( Revelation 6:9-11 )One of the major news items this week concerned the Peruvian military shooting at plane carrying an American missionary and his family. As a result of the shooting, the wife and daughter of the missionary, Veronica & Charity Bowers, were killed. Please pray that God will comfort Jim Bowers and his family, and supply all of their needs at this very difficult time.
At a time like this, it is easy to put aside theological differences. I do not know the Bowers personally, nor am I familiar with the Baptist missionary agency to which he belonged. The fact remians, Jim Bowers was serving God, unselfishly, the best he could, and the best he knew how. Now, he is a widower and a single dad. How could God allow this to happen?
Why does our good God allow bad things to happen? This question has caused many to abandon their faith. It was a question like this that caused Charles Darwin to abandon his faith in a good God, and embrace the godless myth called evolution.
The answer lies in the realm of the Spirit. Knowing the answer doesn't lessen our frustration or grief, but it does at least provide the answer. Our lifetime, even if we live to a ripe old age, is but a twinkling of the eye compared to eternity. The time we spend in pain and tears is but a fleeting moment, compared to the millenia that we will spend in God's presence, and in the presence of the redeemed.
There are those who say that this life is all there is. If that were true, we are certainly to be pitied. But, we know now that there is a life to come, far better than the one which we are experiencing now. In the life to come, the poor will be rich. The hungry will be filled. The tormented will be comforted. The lonely will have a multitude of friends. The despised will be exalted. Those in prison will be set free.
On the other hand the rich, who use their riches selfishly, will be poor. Many of the famous,- the highly esteemed, will be despised. The prosecutors will be prosecuted. The jailers will be confined. The pampered and comforted will be tormented.
As the apostle Paul wrote, it is a blessing to die in the Lord. In the midst of his overwhelming grief, Jim Bowers can know that his wife and daughter are far better off now, than they could ever be on earth. It is he and his son, who must endure the world, and the attacks from Satan, a little longer. As the scripture says, " Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. " " ' Yes, ' says the spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them. "
What about you? Are you ready for the world to come? No one has to go to hell. Only those, who choose to turn aside from the path to heaven, will go to hell. Ask God now for a new heart that will want to serve Him. If we can help, don't wait. E-mail us now!
