The Prayer Of Jabez

" Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name, Jabez, saying, ' Because I bore him in pain. ' "

" And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ' Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain! "   So God granted him what he requested.
( I Chronicles 4:9-10 )

The Prayer of Jabez, by Dr. Bruce Wilkinson, is now a best seller.   Why?   Who was Jabez?   Why was he important?   Or maybe, was he important?   For us, the important question is," What can this man, and his prayer, do for us?

In the Old Testament book of I Chronicles, or in some Bibles, I Paralipomenon, in the 4th chapter and the 9th and 10th verses is the mention of a man named Jabez.   There is nothing to tell us about who he was, or where he fit into the genealogies that come before and after these verses.   These verses fall in the section of the genealogies of the family of Judah, but there is no indication as to where exactly he fit into that family tree, if he did fit in at all.

The importance, then seems to lie not in the man, but in the prayer which he prayed.   Before we consider the prayer, we should consider," To whom did he pray? "   We are told that he prayed to the God of Israel.   He could have prayed to many other gods, but he chose to pray to the God of Israel.   This is of extreme importance.   There is only one true God.   If you want a blessing of any kind, or results of any kind, you need to pray to the only true God.   He has many legitimate names.   Yahweh ( or Jehovah ), El Shaddai, the God of Abraham, the Fear of Isaac, the God of Israel, and others.   He told Moses," I am, that I am. " meaning," I am the one who is. "

This is very important today, because many people pray to a god that they call " my god ".   Praying to any God, other than the one true God, is a waste of time, and won't get you the results that you want.

There are five parts to the prayer, itself:

1. Bless me indeed
2. Enlarge my territory
3. That Your hand would be with me
4. Keep me from evil
5. That I may not cause pain

We are told that God granted him what he requested.   What is this secret to answered prayer?   Jabez followed these simple steps:

1. He prayed to the only true God.
2. His purpose in asking for more territory was unselfish.
3. He asked for God to guide him.
4. He asked God to keep him from doing evil, recognizing that he couldn't do this on his own.
5. He asked that he would not be allowed to hurt others.

In a nutshell, Jabez asked God to make him a righteous person.   The one thing that God desires of mankind, and which is repeated again and again in the Bible, is for man to be righteous.   Those living in disobedience to God's laws,- those living sinful lifestyles, have no hope of gaining God's blessing.   Simply abandoning those lifestyles is not enough.   God wants to change you completely, so that you will not even desire those sinful lifestyles.   He wants you to be willing to be changed,- to have another mind, concerning your rebellion against His commandments.   This is something that religious people call repentance.

It's up to you.   Do you want God to bless you, as He blessed Jabez?   He will, if you surrender your will to Him.   He will bless you, just as He blessed Jabez!
